Discover the thrilling world of night diving at Sodwana Bay Lodge, where the ocean transforms into a mesmerising spectacle after dark. With our service provider Adventure Mania as your expert guide, you'll witness the vibrant nocturnal life of Africa’s southernmost coral reefs.
As the sun sets, coral polyps emerge to feed, while nocturnal creatures such as octopuses, lobsters and moray eels come to life. Bioluminescent organisms light up the water, creating a magical glow. Instructor trainer Amanda van Jaarsveld noted that a Night Dive Specialty certification was required for the night dives. However, the Advanced course may include a night dive, weather permitting.
She continued, ‘The big plus is of course the tranquil ambience of a crowd-free dive with enhanced visibility through artificial lighting. Diving at night highlights the remarkable adaptability of marine species. Creatures such as octopuses, lobsters and bioluminescent organisms become especially active after dark, performing behaviours that add a magical element to each dive.’
Vibrant marine life
Not only will you experience nature’s own light show as bioluminescent organisms shimmer in the darkness, but you can watch coral polyps bloom as they feed, attracting an array of marine species. There’s also the spectacle of invertebrates who use the cover of darkness to clamber over the Sodwana Bay coral reefs.
Nocturnal species such as moray eels and ragged-tooth sharks snap into action after dark, offering divers the opportunity to see these fascinating predators up close and personal.
Explore Sodwana’s iconic reefs, including Two Mile Reef and Quarter Mile Reef, where swim-throughs and overhangs become even more intriguing under the beam of a dive torch.
